Helmets & Safety
Posted on: 30/04/2012 11:48 AM
I would just like to remind everybody of the importance of the cycle helmet and other safety equipment

On Saturday we were riding in Rotterdam when Rachael had the misfortune of having quite a nasty crash, landing head first on concrete, her helmet and Oakley's saved her from what would have been a hospital visit, if not worse. The helmet. Broke and also the glasses broke but they both took the brunt of the impact, she suffered a nasty black eye & abbrasion's to her face, rash on her knee and badly sprained wrist, she is fine and is in good spirits riding the turbo and hopefully be on the bike for the weekend.

With our club outing looming for this weekend lets all have a safe enjoyable day :)

Blimey Den! Glad that Rachel is OK. A bit shaken I would imagine. Yes. I absolutely agree with the use of helmets. They may not always protect you but they certainly save a lot of potentially serious injuries.

Rachel, glad you are on the road to recovery. It must have been a pretty hard impact to break your helmet; good job it wasn't any worse

Rachel,

Glad to hear you are OK.

As a follow up to Den's note, if you do have a spill, replace the helmet even if it is not split. Structural damage may not be visible - can you afford to take the risk for next time you have an accident.

Some of the manufacturers offer a reduced rate replacement for crash damaged helmets.

I'm sorry to hear about the spill but hope to see you at the weekend. It's better that a helmet is the first to hit the ground than your head.

Rachael sorry to hear about your crash and hope you will be OK for the weekend ride. A bit ironic after last Thursday's First Aid course. As Den says if anyone needed reminding about wearing a helmet!!!

That's terrible Rachael but I'm glad you're OK and back on some wheels. I am sure they are painful but get through the other injuries soon and we will see you for the club ride next weekend.

Black eye, road rash and sprained wrist, but still hoping to be out on the weekend. That's the spirit Rachel. Hope the pain is easing.

Today eight of us rode out to Box Hill and had a good day until the return down Wickham Road where Denver unfortunately had a nasty accident, his bike just went from underneath him due to either diesel or a drain cover, he came down hard and the back of his head had a heavy impact which broke his cycle helmet, Gary Bull phoned Karen who came to pick him up and took Denver home, he then went to A&E to be checked over, he has since contacted me and has got the all clear but will be very sore tomorrow.

Once again it's highlighted how important it is to always wear your helmet !!

I'm relieved to know Denver is OK and it was good that Karen was able to collect him (and presumably the bike). Wear those helmets with pride.

And replace them every 3 years! That's what I was told by specialized last week.

I don't need a helmet because I followed the smart people's advise and got stabilizers......

I spoke to Denver last night as well and as Den says he's shaken but not deterred.....get well soon mate.
